Team Pride

Friday, February 5th, 2010

February 9 will be here before all the S.C. High School League teams know it. Region tournaments are right around the corner for all SCISA teams. The point I’m trying to make here is the playoffs are coming. While some teams have already solidifed a spot in the postseason, some teams are still fighting for a shot at having a second season.

Personally, I’m looking forward to seeing who’s in and who’s out.

The Future of North basketball

Friday, February 5th, 2010

When you look at North’s squad, you’ll find a lot of young players looking to make names for themselves.

Until seniors like Devont’e James moves on from the program, the young Eagles are just waiting for their chance to shine. However, one of North’s bright spots is already making a name for himself and his name is Emarius Logan.

Blackville-Hilda vs. Hunter-Kinard-Tyler

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Truthfully, the Lady Trojans wasted no time getting ahead of the Lady Hawks early. Melinda Brimfield set the tone for H-K-T. The versatile forward/center scored 15 of her 29 points. Janobia Tyler even got in on the act in the first half scoring 11 of her 17 points. H-K-T ended the first half with a 32-4 lead. The duo may have put up a majority of the points, but Lady Trojans’ head coach says that it was a team effort.

“Janobia and Melinda make everybody around them better,” he said. “When they play hard, it makes everybody else around them to play hard. They know that they have to score and carry the team on their back at times, but if you look in the books, we had some other girls scoring and contributing. A lot of the girls do a lot of things that don’t get in the books like boxing out, rebounding and things like that.”

The End is Near (pt. 1)

Monday, February 1st, 2010

I know this isn’t my area of expertise, but I felt the urge to dip into the MMA realm and discuss this. Herschel Walker had a pretty good showing on the Strikeforce: Miami event.

First off, the guy is pretty ripped to say he’s 47 years old. Secondly, he seems to be a decent fighter. Granted, he fought a guy that seemed to be…for a lack of better words…inept defensively. Still, for a guy that has never really been seen or known as a cage fighter, he looked good. Kudos to Walker for embracing and conquering the challenge of becoming a mixed martial arts fighter.

Reading is Fundamental

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

Wanna see how interested the McAlister Maniacs were in the Robert E. Lee starting lineups?
McAlister Maniacs
Let’s just say everyone had good reading material.

As the visiting starters were announced, the Orangeburg Prep students’ section pretended to read newspapers. Pretty interesting gimmick if I do say so myself.

More on the Mohawks

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Since 1993, Calhoun County has locked up their respective region championship without fail. The Saints have made a name for themselves not only throughout Class A, but throughout the state as well. They’ve become known for their pressure defense and their ability to convert turnovers into points.

Well, Jamar Washington isn’t the kind of coach who just lays down and admits defeat and that’s the attitude he’s tried to get his players to adopt since 2008.

More on Robert Smith

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Let’s get right to it.

Robert Smith has been a phenomenal athlete for Woodland since his freshman year in 2007. He’s always put up big numbers and those numbers have earned him spots on the All-Area team twice.

The injury that sidelined him this past season was definitely a huge blow to the Wolverines. Granted, they didn’t miss a beat during the regular season, but not having a weapon like Smith hurt Woodland once the second season came around.

More Important Matters

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

I personally want to say that my heart goes out to the folks in Haiti who are going through this difficult time in their lives right now.

I know this is a sports related blog, but there are times when you have to take note of the more important things in life. While rescue efforts have been taking place to save lives, those of us who can’t physically be in Haiti should find a way to help.

Kiffin back at So.Cal / McLiar

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Been a bit of a shocking week in the world of sports to some degree. Okay, so the McGwire thing doesn’t necessarily fall under that category because deep down you knew he was on the juice.

But the other stuff has gotta count, right?
