Towns plan Fourth celebrations
Thursday, July 02, 2009CORDOVA -- A big Fourth of July Celebration will be held in Cordova from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, July 4, at Ebenezer Baptist Church.
Activities will include singing in the prayer garden and an inflatable slide for children. The church's children's group will have a lemonade stand, and snow cones and popcorn will also be available. Cordova Town Council will provide other refreshments, including hot dogs, which will be served on the church lawn.
The town's fireworks display will begin after dark.
Parking will be available from 4 to 10 p.m. at Edisto Primary School. Ebenezer Baptist Church will provide shuttle service to and from the celebration.
ELLOREE -- The town of Elloree will hold its second annual Independence Day Celebration complete with a patriotic program, a picnic and fireworks on Saturday, July 4, at Joe Miller Park.
Hamburgers, hot dogs with chili and all the fixings, chips, corn on the cob, ice cream, watermelons and ice-cold beverages will be available to visitors. Tickets for the concessions will be $1, and all items will be available for one ticket, except the hamburgers, which will go for two tickets. The patriotic program and concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. Music will be directed by Shirley Brandenburg, and the program will feature appearances by members of the armed services, local officials and Lt. Col. Bill Connor, a candidate for state lieutenant governor.
FORT MOTTE -- The eighth annual Fort Motte Reunion Festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, July 4, on the town square in Fort Motte.
The festival will feature live entertainment by the Madison Bumble Bees and DJ Darryl Hampton, children's rides, face painting, clowns, a dunking booth, food, and vendors selling clothes, arts and crafts, jewelry, CDs, DVDs, photography, gardening supplies and more. Also featured will be free Fort Motte historical, cultural and genealogical displays and tours, a barbecue grill cook-off and a horse shoe contest.
Admission to the festival, sponsored by the Friends of Fort Motte, is free.
A free pre-Fort Motte festival softball game will be held at 5:30 p.m. Friday, July 3, at the Fort Motte Community Center on New Bethany Road.
SPRINGFIELD -- Springfield's 13th annual Fourth of July Celebration will be held Saturday, July 4, at the Springfield ball park on Railroad Avenue. A patriotic program will being at 8:40 p.m., and a fireworks display will begin at 9 p.m., or first dark.
This year's event is dedicated to all United States military veterans, to the men and women now serving, and to the country's political leaders.
Help for this S.C. National Heritage Corridor event is provided by the Springfield Volunteer Fire Department.
