CC star Jeffery closing in on being eligible for Gamecocks
By BRIAN LINDER, T&D Sports Editor Monday, June 29, 2009ST. MATTHEWS — It looks like Alshon Jeffery will be a South Carolina Gamecock next season.
Monday, Calhoun County head coach Walt Wilson said Jeffery’s SAT score was good enough to get him into the University of South Carolina, but that he still needed to make an “A” in his science class, taken online through Edisto High School, to cement his eligibility for the upcoming season.
“It’s a combination of the class he is taking and the score he made,” Wilson said. “If he does what he is supposed to do in the class, the score he made is good.
“The test score is good,” he said. “It’s good enough with the class. With an ‘A’ in the class, it’s good enough. We should know by Thursday when he finishes this class.”
Jeffery’s signing was a coup for the Gamecocks back on National Signing Day. Ranked as the 99th best prospect in the nation by Rivals.com, the Under Armour All-American and Shrine Bowl selection hauled in 30 passes for 693 yards and 12 touchdowns during his senior season. He was a two-time first team T&D All-Area football selection and was a two-time T&D All-Area basketball Player of the Year selection. Originally, Jeffery committed to the University of Southern California and kept everyone guessing until signing day when he announced he would be a Gamecock. Since, the status of his eligibility has been the topic of much discussion amongst Gamecocks fans. Jeffery said he was always confident he would be eligible.
“Everything is good,” he said. “My grades are good, and I’m feeling pretty good. I’m just ready to get up (to South Carolina) lift some weights, get faster and stronger.
“I knew what I was going to do,” he added. “I was going to make the test scores and I was going to make the grades.”
Now, it appears that is on the cusp of coming to fruition.
“It isn’t done yet,” Wilson said. “If everything goes the way it’s supposed to, he more than likely might start (the second session of summer school) Sunday. That’s if everything goes the way it is supposed to. But I want say it’s a done deal until I see that envelope, signed, sealed and accepted.”
