Lions in the concession stand at Post 4
By EMERY GLOVER, T&D Sports Writer Saturday, June 20, 2009With the Lions Club searching for more ways to raise money to serve the community, American Legion Post 4 came up with a suggestion that would benefit the organization and the fans.
Since the beginning of the American Legion baseball season, the Lions Club has sold concessions at Mirmow Field to satisfy hungry fans all while raising funds for a good cause.
“What the Lions do basically is they give money so that people can get eye exams or get glasses if they cannot afford them,” Lions Club member Charlie Pace said. “Since everything is going up and the economy is bad right now, we decided we needed a few more fundraisers and the American Legion asked if we would mind doing the concession stand.”
The Lions Club boasts a fairly large menu with various delights. With so many items to choose from, Pace believes it’s hard to pick a fan favorite.
“It’s pretty balanced,” Pace said. “We have bologna sandwiches, which seems to have been a big hit. We’ve got hot dogs with homemade chili. We’ve got corn dogs and we do have chicken strips.”
What makes the menu flexible is the ability to turn any order into a basket. Most of the foods that can be found on the menu can be served with French fries giving the customer more bang for their buck.
“If you do that,” Pace said. “You’re able to save about 50 cent by ordering the basket rather than ordering it separately.”
Over the course of three weeks, the Lions have averaged close to $400 per home game giving Pace and his fellow club members a reason to smile.
“We’ve done pretty well,” Pace said. “I’ve been pleased with the turnout. It seems like when Post 4 wins, we have more people out here. But we seem to be having a good session each night. We’ve only really had what I call one off night and that really wasn’t an off night. So, it was good.”
The Lions Club will be adding hamburgers to the menu for the final three home games giving fans one more option to choose from. Even with the new item, Pace believes fans will get their money’s worth when they package the price of admission to a Post 4 game with what they’ll spend on concessions.
“It’s a great deal,” he said. “You can bring your kids out here. You’ve got the meals here with a ball game and it’s not very expensive.”
