ST. MATTHEWS – A representative of the U.S. Small Business Administration was the speaker at the Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce’s business luncheon on Oct. 1.
The gathering was held at St. Paul United Methodist Church.
Anna C. Huntley, SBA public information officer, provided an overview of its functions, noting that the organization has not been affected by the current Wall Street crisis.
“Small business is the backbone of the South Carolina economy,” Huntley said.
She defined “small business” as having 500 or fewer employees. Small businesses account for 50 percent of all non-farm jobs, Huntley said.
SBA loan funds are available at 85 percent for loans under $150,000 and 75 percent for those in excess of $150,000, she said. Also available, Huntley said, is a new special incentive loan, the Patriot Express Loan, which is available to active duty and veterans service members and will be processed in minimal time. Advisors are available to small business owners free of charge, she said.
Also during the meeting, Chamber President Keith Hudgins reminded members of two upcoming events. The Chamber’s annual golf tournament will be held at the Calhoun Country Club from noon until 5 p.m. on Oct. 17, he said. Hudgins also announced the Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce’s Business After Hours, sponsored by the Regional Medical Center, will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Nov. 20 at Tri-County Electric Cooperative.
