COLUMBIA - Gloria (Benjamin) Pooser has recently been promoted to the position of assistant district manager of the Columbia Social Security District office.

Pooser is a 1973 graduate of Holly Hill High School and is the daughter of the late Jessie Lee Benjamin Edwards.

The Columbia District Office services more than 104,000 Social Security and Supplemental Security Income beneficiaries in Richland and Lexington counties representing $95.7 million in monthly benefit payments.

Pooser said, “I began my career with the agency 29 years ago in the Orangeburg Social Security District office as a co-op student while attending South Carolina State University. At the time I was mainly concerned with just securing a good job. Through hard work, perseverance, and the support of my family, I’ve been able to take advantage of available opportunities.”

Upon graduation from S.C. State in 1981, she was hired by the agency and worked as a claims representative. Later she was promoted to the technical expert position and subsequently achieved the position operations supervisor.

Pooser is married to Little Joe Pooser of Vance and is the mother of Lathan Jerrell (Greenville) and Jessica Anne Pooser (Rock Hill). She is the first African-American assistant district manager of the Columbia office.
