EIA grants awarded to 9 area teachers

Eight teachers in Orangeburg Consolidated School District 5 will collectively receive nearly $47,000 in grant money from the state this year to use innovative techniques in the classroom.

The Education Improvement Act Teacher Awards ranged from $800 to $6,000 and will be paid out over the course of the year. The awards support practices and procedures aimed at improving instruction.

Six of the eight OCSD 5 award winners received the maximum amount. Elizabeth Fogle from Lake Marion High School in OCSD 3 also received an EIA grant award.

Statewide, more than $1.2 million in grants was awarded to 338 teachers.

The following is list of the awards winners in The Times and Democrat Region:

* Elizabeth Fogle, Lake Marion High (OCSD 3), $5,164.

* James Gaskin, Bethune-Bowman Middle/High (OCSD 5), $6,000.

* Latasha Little, Brookdale Elementary (OCSD 5), $6,000.

* DaBetta Smith, Brookdale Elementary (OCSD 5), $6,000.

* Candace Kilcoyne, Dover Elementary (OCSD 5), $6,000.

* Johnson Kemeka, OCSD 5 Technology Center (OCSD 5), $5,000.

* Idella Carson, Orangeburg-Wilkinson High (OCSD 5), $5,979.

* Ivory Hubbard-Mack. William J. Clark Middle (OCSD 5), $6,000.

* Malissa Wright, William J. Clark Middle (OCSD 5), $6,000.
