Folly Beach mayor wants abandoned boats gone
By The Associated PressMonday, August 18, 2008FOLLY BEACH, S.C. - The town of Folly Beach has issued a warning to the owners of boats abandoned in the surrounding creeks and marshes: remove them or the town will do it for you.
One cabin cruiser in the Folly marsh grass is known locally as the “SS Minnow,” in part because of what someone spray-painted on the hull and the boat’s resemblance to the “Gilligan’s Island” wreck.
The Charleston Post and Courier report that Folly Beach is only giving public notice for now. The town hopes to win a grant later this year from he state office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management to help pay for the removal cost. A contractor will lift the hulk, bag it in plastic and take it to a local dump where the fiberglass remnant will be crushed.
