City gets $120,000 grant for new canopy at depot
By LAURA G. CARLSON, T&D Correspondent Friday, July 18, 2008DENMARK, S.C. - Construction is under way on a freestanding canopy for the renovated Denmark Depot on U.S. 78.
The depot will serve as a welcome center for travelers, including those traveling the S.C. National Heritage Corridor.
Frank Lundy and Bruce Penland of Frank Lundy Architect Associates Inc. of Columbia were in Denmark Tuesday checking on progress on the canopy they designed which is being built on the Baruch Street (south) side of the Denmark Depot.
Foundation construction is being done by Skip Welch Construction Co. of Orangeburg.
According to Denmark City Administrator Heyward Robinson, a $120,000 S.C. Highway Department of Transportation Enhancement Grant is funding the project. The design will be reminiscent of the canopy that was at one time parallel to the train tracks there, Robinson said.
Canopy construction is expected to be completed in about four months.
