CHARLOTTE, N.C. - AAA Carolinas is forecasting July 4th holiday traffic won't increase in North Carolina and South Carolina over the prior year for the first time since 2001.

The Charlotte-based travel group says about one million North Carolina drivers and 551,000 South Carolina drivers are expected to hit the roads through Sunday.

That's a 1.3 percent decrease in the number of July 4th drivers from 2007.

AAA Carolinas President and CEO David Parsons says the high price of fuel may be the reason for fewer travelers.

Gasoline prices hit new records Monday.

The average in North Carolina was $3.99 for a gallon of unleaded gasoline, up 23 cents from Memorial Day. The average price in South Carolina was $3.86, up 22 cents since Memorial Day.
