Holly Hill softball champs lead South to a 7-5 victory in All-Star game
By DREW TRIPP, Special to The T&DSunday, May 18, 2008Members of Holly Hill Academy’s SCISA Class AA state champion softball team saw their recent success on the diamond continue Saturday playing for the South in the SCISA Class A-AA North-South All-star game, notching a 7-5 victory over the North squad.
Holly Hill head coach Henry Lockey was named as the coach of the South squad for the fifth time in his career. The South consisted of 15 players from six teams in the Lowcountry and Midlands, including five players − Katie Carpenter, Brittany Cheek, Brittany Dantzler, Brandy Lassiter and Taylor Owens − from Holly Hill’s championship team. Megan Carn of Calhoun Academy was also selected.
Katie Carpenter got the win on the mound for the South, and was 1-for-2 at the plate. Cheek and Lassiter also had one hit each. Hannah Morgan and Anna Adkins of Colleton Prep had hits while Erin Wessinger of St. Johns Christian made the most of her one at-bat with her first career home run. The South led throughout the contest.
“For us not playing together and not knowing each other I thought we did a really good job,” Lockey said after the game. “Everybody played out of position but everybody still played well. It was just a good fun day for everybody trying to recognize everybody for their good season this year.”
