ISSUE: Community of Character
OUR VIEW: Courage is many things - and many things it is not
COURAGE! That’s the Community of Character trait in Orangeburg County for May. Courage is, as the great Mark Twain put it, “the resistence to fear, mastery of fear -- no absence of fear.” There are so many things that courage is NOT. Courage is not moral cowardice, not sneaky, nor shameful, not dishonest.
COURAGE is audacious, achievement, daring, stamina, adventurous and adventuresome. Courage is grit, intestinal fortitude, guts, brave, heart of oak, bold, moral, good, valorous, heroic, backbone, virtue, mainly, womanly, unafraid, spunky, spirited, righteous brave, acquitting yourself welll. You face or stand up to; you’re noble, unwilling to fail; take the bull by the horns, bell the cat, march up to the cannon’s mouth; get up the nerve, buck up, have unshrinking convictions. You’re intrepid, doughty, manly, resolute with a stiff upper lip, chivalrous.
“Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, “I will try again tomorrow.”
“Courage is the discovery that you may not win, and trying when you know you can lose.” -- Krause
Courage’s vision comes from passion, not position.
Courage enables one to face danger, fear or vicissitude with self-possession, confidence and resolution with bravery.
Let’s make May a month in which to accomplish the good stuff to make life better for ourselves and those who love us.
