Father James William Law

Father James William Law, 75, a Priest of the church, died Thursday, May 15, 2008, in Beaufort.

The funeral will be a 1928 Prayer Book Solemn High Requiem Mass celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, May 19, at The Parish Church of St. Helena, officiated by the Rev. Jeffrey Miller and The Right Rev. C. Shannon Mallory. Burial will follow in the St. Helena Historic Churchyard.

He was born February 10, 1933, a son of the late Edgar and Hazel Hendricks Law, the third of eight children. He was a twice wounded, permanently disabled veteran of the Korean War. He received a Bachelor Degree from Trinity College in Hartford, Conn. and a Masters of Divinity from the University of the South at Sewanee, Tenn. He served as Rector at St. Martins in Chattanooga, Tenn., St. Lukes in Anchorage, Ky., All Saints in Thomasville, Ga. and All Souls in Oklahoma City. Father Law was one of the original founders of the Prayer Book Society in 1971.

In retirement, Father Law served at The Parish Church of St. Helena in Beaufort doing pastoral work and the 1928 Wednesday Service and participated in a prison ministry. He also served as interim Rector at The Church of the Redeemer in Orangeburg.

Father Law is survived by his wife, Nancy; one daughter, Polly Rembert and her husband, Mark; one son, David Law; one stepdaughter, Heather Metcalfe; one s.jpgon, Campbell Metcalfe and his wife, Rebecca; five grandchildren, Eric Rembert, Louis, Ward, Jane and Sara Caroline Metcalfe; three brothers, Tom, John, and Pete Law and three sisters, Hazel McNally, Charlotte Law and Bezzie Woodson.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Edgar.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Preservation Trust for Historic St. Helena Church Inc., P.O. Box 1043, Beaufort, SC 29901 or Friends of Caroline Hospice, 1110 13th St., Port Royal, SC 29935.

Copeland Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
