Cope author set to hold book signing May 22
By SONJA GLEATON, T&D Features WriterThursday, May 15, 2008Lena Ayer Kittrell of Cope is a Christian poet, talented musician and gifted artist. When Kittrell isn't busy capturing nature's beauty on canvas, she is artistically painting bea.jpgul portraits with words.
Kittrell's latest collection of inspirational poetry arrived recently from Morris Publishing, and a book signing for the author will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, May 22, in the Lusty Gallery at the Orangeburg County Fine Arts Center.
"I hope everyone will come to our book signing for Lena A. Kittrell. Her latest book of poetry, 'For His Glory,' is filled with inspiring, gr.jpgying and heart-warming words that will most assuredly lift your spirits. And Lena not only writes bea.jpgully, she is an accomplished artist. Adding to the interest of the book signing, Lena will also be exhibiting some of her wonderful paintings," said Beth Thomas, executive director of the center.
Kittrell used her artistic abilities to design the cover of the handsome book. The author photographed a section of the Edisto River that flows through the Canaan area. Using the photo as a guide, Kittrell painted the scene on canvas, and a print was used for the cover of the book.
"The purpose of 'For His Glory,' is to bring honor to God and blessings to readers." Kittrell said.
Kittrell's 150-page book features 138 original poems that are divided among four chapters; Inspirational, Spiritual Advisory, Memories and Lighter Side. One poem, "The Secret Garden," featured in the book was co-written by Kittrell and her granddaughter, Victoria Lauren Carter.
"Victoria and I had great fun writing 'The Secret Garden,' and I'm certain the poem will delight and appeal to other aspiring young poets," Kittrell said.
Kittrell began writing poems and keeping journals 14 years ago and, since that time, has written many volumes of poetry, short stories and proverbial sayings. An accomplished pianist, Kittrell also writes musical compositions.
Kittrell said, "In 2001, with the help of friends, my first book of poetry, 'Cherished Moments,' was self-published. A second book, 'Golden Nuggets,' followed in 2004 and was very well received. Last year, Pauline M. Brown, author of 'The Woman Who Lived Between The Walls' and other books, recommended that I contact Morris Publishing in Kearney, Nebraska, about publishing a collection of my most recent poems."
Once a published was selected, Kittrell said everything else seemed to magically fall into place.
Kittrell explained, "My pastor, Rev. Scott Alewine, offered spiritual guidance, and family, friends and my husband, Jacob, provided encouragement and support. Tom Davis of Old Mountain Press agreed to be the typesetter for the book. Dr. Susan Connor, a personal friend and respected gynecologist, suggested the book's title, and Dr. Richard P. Belcher, a retired professor and noted writer, wrote the foreword. The making of this book has truly been an memorable experience."
"For His Glory" is now available in Orangeburg at Ann's House of Treasures, Lynnell's Gifts & Home Decor, Bedding & More and Sportsman Barber Shop, in Denmark at Brooker's and in Bamberg at Main Street Garden & Gifts. The book may be obtained from the author by calling 534-7491 and at the book signing.
