PORT ST. LUCIE, FL — The South Carolina State men’s golf team lost ground Sunday in the final round of the 22nd PGA Minority Golf Championship, carding an 18-hole total of 314, its highest round of the three-day event, in finishing sixth in the 13-team Division I field at the PGA Golf Club.
Retiring head coach Richard Arrington’s team, which was tied for fourth after two rounds, finished the 54-hole event at (302-296-314) 912.
The SC State women also dropped a few shots Sunday with a final-round 346 to finish with a 54-hole total of (340-337-346) 1023, however, Coach Herman Belton’s team maintained its third place behind champion Bethune-Cookman, who won its third straight title, and second-place Texas-Pan American..
Second-round leader Bethune-Cookman, which had a 288 on Sunday, was the men’s Division I winner with a 54-hole total of (298-286-288) 872. The Wildcats’ Carl Corbin captured medalist honors with a 7-under par (72-68-69) 209.
Senior Matt Gilliard led the Bulldog effort with a 54-hole total of (74-74-78) 226. He was followed by junior Robert Biggers, who was at (78-72-78) 228, and seniors Aaron Robinson (73-75-82) and Cory Jozefiak (77-75-78), both at 230, and sophomore Hector Arroyave at (80-76-80) 236. Brennen Thomas participated for SC State in the individual competition and finished at (93-98-85) 276 after an 85 on Sunday.
Freshman Honesty Biggers had a 54-hole total of (82-83-84) 249 to lead the SC State women. She was followed by sophomore Addi McLaren, who was at (83-86-85) 254, senior Jennie McCollum with a (85-85-86) 256, sophomore Geneva Mackey, who was at (98-83-91) at 272 and junior Danielle Williams with a (90-98-92) 290.
Ale Camey of Bethune-Cookman won medalist honors in the women’s field with a 54-hole total of (75-77-74) 226.
