CANADYS -- On Saturday, May 17, volunteers are needed for the annual spring sweep of the Edisto River. Volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. at Colleton State Park and will be dispersed on the lower river. Litter and trash will be collected from the river and its landings, and volunteers will meet back at the part for a cookout at 2 p.m.

Howard Bridgman is lead organizer for the cleanup on the lower Edisto between Dorchester and Colleton counties. For more information or to volunteer, e-mail Bridgman at hsb0255@bellsouth.net.

Stewardship Day is for the whole Edisto River system. More leaders are needed to organize river cleanups on other sections of the Edisto. To organize a river cleanup, choose a favorite river segment, boat landing or some other public access site along the Edisto River system, set a time, and recruit friends, family, scout groups, churches or civic groups to help with the cleanup. To see the many places to the river, check out access sites and a map at the Friends of the Edisto Web site, http://www.edistofriends.org/edisto_access.htm.
