Enjoy good times at Maize Days
By T&D STAFF Thursday, May 08, 2008SANTEE -- Fun for all ages is guaranteed at Santee's sixth annual Maize Days Festival, set for Saturday and Sunday, May 17-18.
Maize Days festivities begin at 8 a.m. Saturday with the Santee Lions Club Pancake Breakfast in the Cultural Arts Center. Opening ceremonies will be held at 9 a.m., and most festival events are free of charge.
The day-long popular Community Yard Sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Attendees will find an enormous selection of gently used treasures from the homes of their neighbors at low prices and have the opportunity to socialize with friends at the event.
From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., festivalgoers will be entertained outdoors at the Musical Showcase, and at 1 p.m., VFW Post 10980 will present a "Salute to Veterans" ceremony to honor the men and women who have served and are serving in the United States armed forces.
A golf driving contest and demonstrations by a local pro will be featured at noon and 3 p.m. Saturday, affording local and visiting golfers the opportunity to show off their stuff.
From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Santee Town Complex will be full of action with inflatables for kids, a car show, games and exhibitors. Festival foods will be plentiful, with corn on the cob, popcorn and a host of other treats.
From noon to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, the town of Santee will present the Taste of Santee, featuring a selection of dishes from the town's best restaurants. Plenty of seating will be available in the shade, and musical entertainment will be provided by the Santee River Jazz band.
A highlight of Sunday afternoon will be the Bridal and Formal Fashion Show, featuring local models, which will be presented by Making Memories Breast Cancer Foundation at 2 p.m. The organization, located at the Santee Outlet Mall, sells designer bridal gowns to the public at a discount to benefit breast cancer patients.
