Editor's note: "Kids' kitchen" is a new, monthly column dedicated to children who love to cook -- with, of course, the assistance and permission of their parents. Clemson Extension Agent Leigh W. Joyner will provide recipes, jokes, safety tips, lessons and fun ideas for aspiring young cooks. If you have an idea for an upcoming column, contact Joyner at 803-534-6280 or lawlkr@clemson.edu. You can also contact Wendy Jeffcoat Crider, T&D features editor, at 803-533-5546 or wjeffcoat@timesanddemocrat.com. We hope you enjoy this new feature, which can be found on the Taste page every fourth Wednesday.

Why were the little strawberries upset? (Find the hidden answer!)

If you are a kid who likes to cook or help in the kitchen, this new column is for you. Right here, once a month, you will find:

Kitchen safety tips

Measuring lessons

Ideas for cooking fun

... all just for you!

The recipes and lessons will be from the 4-H program at the Clemson Extension Service. That means they have been tested and are pretty good. I cannot say how good the jokes and riddles will be. (Send me your jokes, riddles, recipes, questions and ideas, too. Contact me anytime at 803-534-6280 or lawlkr@clemson.edu.)

Strawberries are growing in the garden right now. This month's recipe uses strawberries.

Your body needs 1-1/2 cups of fruit every day. Make sure it is something you enjoy! For example, blueberries taste good with strawberries and with bananas. Peaches taste good on waffles or in shakes. You can change the fruits in this recipe with the fruit you like best. Just make sure you get plenty of fruit every

day.

Strawberry-Banana Waffles

Ingredients:

2 bananas, peeled

3/4 cup strawberries, washed and sliced

1/3 cup strawberry (100 percent fruit) spread

4 frozen toaster waffles

You will need:

Permission from an adult

Cutting board

Knife (or safety cutter found at most kitchen stores)

Small mixing bowl

Spoon

Toaster

Directions:

Slice bananas thinly. In the mixing bowl, combine bananas, strawberries and fruit spread. Set aside.

Toast waffles. Spoon strawberry-banana mixture over waffles. Makes two servings.

(Answer to riddle: Because their parents were in a jam.)

Don't forget to send me your questions about how to do something in the kitchen. Send me your jokes, ideas and favorite recipes, too. Contact me anytime at 803-534-6280 or lawlkr@clemson.edu.
