South Carolina State University's board of trustees meets today, with the role of the trustees and the future of the president expected to be a topic for at least two speakers.
On the agenda for the 9 a.m. meeting are state Sen. Robert Ford of Charleston and S.C. State National Alumni Association President Patricia Lott of Orangeburg. Their speeches come following recent reports the board has decided to oust President Andrew Hugine Jr.
Neither Hugine nor board Chairman Maurice Washington would provide specifics on any board actions regarding the president, but Washington told The Times and Democrat in late November that no vote has been taken on ousting Hugine. He suggested that consideration of presidential succession procedures may have prompted communication among alumni about Hugine's future.
E-mails circulating among alumni in recent weeks have made reference to a board decision to end Hugine's tenure in June, when his contract expires, or before. Cited also was a conference call with Lott and other alumni leaders to discuss the situation at SCSU and Hugine's future.
Lott nor alumni chapter presidents would confirm the call was held.
Yet former national alumni leader Audrey Q. Battiste of Atlanta, writing in a letter to the editor in today's T&D, says Lott and legislators, as well as other alumni, will be at today's board meeting "in support of the university." She stops short of saying her letter and alumni actions are in direct support of Hugine but calls for changes on the board, including the resignation of Washington.
The trustee meeting will be in Belcher Hall Room 206.
