SCSU trustee leader has heard rumors

South Carolina State University Board Chairman Maurice Washington acknowledges he's seen the letters, heard the rumors and speculation about the board attempting to oust SCSU President Dr. Andrew Hugine Jr.

Some SCSU alumni have been circulating e-mails discussing an alleged secret meeting of the board in which they voted to terminate Hugine. One e-mail suggested the leader of the SCSU National Alumni Association held a conference call with national officers and committee chairs, as well as chapter presidents from around the country, to discuss the issue.

But during a break from board committee meetings on the SCSU campus Thursday, Washington said there has been no secret vote of the board to oust Hugine.

"We've heard the rumors circulating around the president. As a governing body, we are not commenting about the rumors publicly or privately," Washington said.

Washington also praised Hugine as a fine member of the university.

While declining to speak at length about the subject of board satisfaction with the president, Washington did say the president would be evaluated in June when his contract expires.

He also said it is part of the SCSU board's job to develop a succession plan in the event Hugine leaves the university. Washington believes that plan may have been why the rumors developed.

"We are looking to the future. Part of looking at the future is that you make an assessment at the depth of leadership on the campus," he said.

Later, Hugine would not address the issue, saying he does not speak to rumors.

"I have not, will not ever respond to rumors. That's the first issue," Hugine said.

At this juncture, Hugine said whatever decision is made in terms of his future, his family would discuss the matter.

Contacted by phone, SCSU Alumni Summerville Chapter President Bill Goodwin Jr. said he was told that all questions regarding Hugine's future were to be referred to National Alumni Association President Patricia Lott of Orangeburg.

Also reached by phone, Lott said she really does not know any hard facts about the situation and declined to comment further.

An e-mail circulating from SCSU Alumni Atlanta Chapter President Teddy Carter obtained by The Times and Democrat said the SCSU board voted to oust Hugine. Carter's letter also mentioned a conference call by Lott with other alumni leaders to discuss the issue.

"Unfortunately, this is not a rumor, and the board voted against President Andrew Hugine," the letter stated.

According to the letter, a majority of those who participated in the conference call felt the ousting was inappropriate, citing the success the university has seen under Hugine's leadership.

Stating support for Hugine and against any change at this time, Carter's letter urged alumni to make contact with him about any questions for the board ahead of the trustee meeting on Dec. 6.

Contacted by phone on Thursday, Carter would offer no further comment on the matter.

Letters circulating among alumni reference a letter from SCSU 1989 alumnus Alexander "Herc" Conyers, who is stationed in Afghanistan. Addressed to the board, alumni and S.C. newspaper outlets, the Conyers' letter details the writer's disapproval of treatment of Hugine.

"Mr. Washington, as I sit here in Afghanistan, I am in total disbelief about the most recent rumors that involve my beloved Alma Mater, South Carolina State University. Under normal circumstances, I don't deal with rumors, but the alleged pending forced resignation/retirement of Dr. Andrew Hugine has compelled me to respond now rather than later.

"I find it reprehensive that during this period of unprecedented growth and accomplishments for the University, the Board of Trustees, under your leadership, will seek to dismiss the president of the South Carolina State University."

He ultimately calls for Washington to exit also if Hugine is to be ousted.

" I hate to burst you bubble but I graduated from SCSU and I have as much stake in which direction the Universities goes. For those of you on the sideline stay there. Those of us who have seen these transgressions take place we all know the school will be better served with a new honest, hardworking, and diligent president. Someone who cares about the students and not the money he can make disappear... "

" ICU81, you got to be the most idiotic, immature person on this site. I can speak on this matter because I did my grad work at this great university. I'm not a disgruntled former employee like yourself. Get over it and move on with your life. If the Alumni would put the same amount of energy in the positive things going on........you just may make a difference. Do me a favor look at the positive articles written about SCSU and put the same amount of energy as you do the negative. "

" I see that we are name-calling like childern again. So how much money are these cabinet memebers getting paid ICU81? Also, who is authorizing their pay increases? "

" SCSU Alumni, its time for you to make a stand and stop allowing others to talk negatively about your university. You guys have know backbone. Can you really see that these people doesn't mean you guys any good. We may have problems at Claflin but we handle things in house. To bad you guys dont have a clue. Congratulations to you guys getting your accredidation with your new Child Development program. That speaks volumes and these are the things you guys need to be focused on. "

" Unfortunately most SCSU alumni can't see pass the new dorms to see that something is terribly wrong with the job the President is doing at SCSU. I blame the Board of Trustees for re-opening the hiring process just for Hugine when we could have gotten a quality President in the beginning. "

" I agree with ICU81 A good friend of the hogg's personally HR about a VP position....he has 2 doctorate degrees, and wanted to serve at an HBCU./...he was not called back after several voice mails left in Human Resources... "

" How come Hugines' cabinet members have been getting such big raises and they do nothing. I mean nothing. Let's say you call the school about something. They will get your number but never call you back. If you don't believe me look at the pay scale it's Public info. "

" Dr Hugine is a nice person, and he has done a lot of great things at SCSU.....but still water runs deep. just because everything at SCSU seems good and calm on the surface doesnt mean that there are not issues under the surface that need to be addressed. Why is it that Hugine has been in there 3 years and still, most of the VP positions have not been filled and still have interim people in the slots? other colleges (A&T for example) have gotten new presidents more recently than we have and still have managed to fill all their cabinet slots. Same thing for the director of the Clyburn center position. "

" I'm not sure what to make of all these accusations and responses thereto. However, I will say this article does not totally quell my suspicions that unethical if not criminal activity is afoot on the campus at SCSU. This morning alone, I have received no less than 20 comments and or responses about Dr. Hugine's ouster. Hopefully Chairman Washington will give a more formal and informative response to put these accusations to rest. "

" Dr. Andrew Hugine jr, Is doing a great at SCSU. He is taking this University to a new height. He is willing to listen to other about certain ideas and improvement. Lets pay him more for doing such a fine job. We are always readly to suck up rumors and kill our souls and hinder advancement when it is in progress. Let this man complete his job. The other Universities pay their men, when they are doing a good job. They do'nt have to hold a check. His bonus should be more than that, since he did more than those other jack legs we had for PRES. A bunch of crabs holding back progress.... "

" ICU81, sometimes you go over board. I've had a chance to look at your post on other message boards and you are beginning to sound like a former disgruntled employee. Everyone has an opinion but sometimes you take things to far. If you know longer work for the university why dont you move on with your life and find a new hobbie. I'm happy you are not one of Claflins past employees because you are beginning to sound ridiculous. I've never seen this much infactuation with a university like you. I've had employees that I didn't care for but that was in the past. Do me a favor and please don't say you are doing this because you love the kids at this terrific university. Albino take care and move on. "

" Some needs to take the School board out back and beat 'em with a board. Heck let me do it. you know some people are just stupid. Maybe the state board of eduation needs to investigate the board. Or maybe we should bring the feds in to investigate the board. How about those expensive lunches at Ruth Chris in Columbia? Y'all can eat at Hardees. bring your mate or kids on state funded trips. you didn't eat 80 dollars worth f food all by yourself. So stay off Hugine's back. Hugine has been a has been a major asset in the advancement of my alma mater. I am about to produce a major motion picture and if SCSU and the board wants to see a donation you need to back up off my man. "
