Crest Lawn Memorial Gardens on Columbia Road in Orangeburg is now home to a Blue Star Memorial honoring all veterans who have served the U.S.

The dedication ceremony was conducted by the Wisteria Garden Club of Orangeburg earlier this month.

Blue Star Memorials were first conceived in 1946 to honor veterans of World War II. Since that time, hundreds of memorials have been dedicated by Garden Clubs throughout the nation to honor the Armed Forces, past and present. The "Blue Star" is the center piece of the memorial and is symbolic of the blue star on the World War II Service Flag.

The Service Flag was displayed in many homes of service men and women as a tribute to their service and sacrifice for their country.

Among the guests for the dedication were: Diane Curlee, president and Catherine Senn, past president, of the Wisteria Garden Club; Sarah Ann Parler of Elloree, past president of the Garden Clubs of S.C.; Anne Brown of Charlotte, N.C., South Atlantic Region director of the National Garden Clubs; Donna Donnelly of Elloree, West Lowcountry District director; Mary Rivers of Denmark, second vice president GCSC and the Rev. Charles Bennett, American Legion state chaplain.
