girls sweep THA
RIDGELAND – The Calhoun Academy varsity and junior varsity girls’ basketball teams defeated Thomas Heyward Academy on Thursday.
In the varsity contest, Charlotte Perrow scored 17 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had a steal to lead the Lady Cavaliers to a 43-27 victory. Also contributing for Calhoun Academy (2-1) were Hannah Bozard with eight points, Kelsey Sanders with seven and Katherine Howle with six.
Calhoun Academy rolled to a 29-7 win the junior varsity game as Jessica Lyons scored 11 points, had eight steals and grabbed five rebounds and Brittany Irick had eight points, five rebounds and four steals.
Both teams will be back in action Tuesday when they travel to Thomas Sumter Academy.
RIDGELAND – The Calhoun Academy varsity Cavaliers fell to Thomas Heyward 46-42 Thursday in Ridgeland. Leading the Cavs were Travis Riley, 15 points; Kendall Wannamaker, 14 points.
The Cavs will be back in action Tuesday on the road against Thomas Sumter.

The Dorchester Academy Lady Raiders defeated Andrew Jackson Academy 56-31 Thursday night. The win was the first on the year for the varsity Lady Raiders.
Leaders for DA were Callie Moorer, 15 points, 14 rebounds, two blocks; Sabrina Herman, 12 points, three steals; Morgan Westbury, 11 points, three steals. Leading the way for Andrew Jackson Academy was Kristen Mixon with 11 points.
The Lady Raiders will be on the road tonight at Thomas Heyward.

Isaac Riley scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Quint Garvin added 14 points on his 16th birthday as Orangeburg Christian Academy defeated Maranatha Christian School 56-43 on Thursday.
Clif Kneece also posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Patriots (2-1).
In girls’ action, OCA dropped to 1-2 following a 47-22 loss.
Laurie Lee scored 11 points to lead the Lady Patriots, while Francis Rollinson had a game-high 24 points for Maranatha.
OCA travel to Charleston today for a 5 p.m. game against Ferndale Christian Academy.
WILLISTON – Reginald Edwards scored 15 points and Keaton Richardson had nine as Hunter-Kinard-Tyler defeated Williston-Elko 37-28 in junior varsity basketball on Thursday.
H-K-T (1-0) plays host to Denmark-Olar on Monday.

to USC-Aiken
AIKEN – The Claflin University women’s basketball team was trying to get back on a winning streak Thursday against USC Aiken after a close loss to Newberry College two nights three nights earlier.
Instead, the Lady Pacers were determined not to be the victim of the Pantherettes as they pulled out a 72-65 victory. Four players scored in double figures for USC-Aiken as Jordan Thomas and Mindy Allee each scored 13 points, Satu Leppanen had 12 points and Avonte Williams contributed 10 points.
Claflin was paced by Latoya Savage with a game high 18 points and Orangeburg-Wilkinson graduates Taffika Haynes and Jayshaun Bailey added 16 points.
The Pantherettes shot 43 percent from the field and 40 percent from behind the three point arc. They will try to get back on the winning track this Friday and Saturday in the Wingate University Classic.
WEDNESDAY’S GAMES
UWA, 48-42
LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Claflin University Panthers defeated The University of West Alabama 48-42 in men’s basketball action on Wednesday night in Pruitt Hall.
Phillip Brown led the Panthers’ (2-3) offensive attack with 15 points as Casey Jackson chimed in 11 points and Ernest Sinkfield led Claflin with seven rebounds.
The Tigers (3-4) were paced by Stan Gill with a game-high 18 points and nine boards. Raymond Shaw contributed eight points in the losing effort.
CU Shot 44 percent from the field, but were just 4-17 from behind the arc (24 percent) and 6-10 from the free throw line, 71 percent for the game.
The Tigers held the advantage for much of the first half but with just eight minutes remaining in the opening half, went cold from the field and allowed the Panthers to take a two point lead at the break, 21-19.
UWA would take the lead in the second half going on a 7-2 run, but the Panthers answered with a 7-2 run of their own to regain the lead. The Panthers would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the game.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday as they take on Clark-Atlanta University, in Atlanta beginning at 7:30 p.m.

college team to win
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Bennett College, coached by Holly Hill native Javon Gilliard improved to 2-3 on the season following a 61-34 victory over Piedmont College on Thursday.
Bergundy Godbee scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Jessica Harrison scored 13 points and grabbed 20 rebounds for Bennett College, which travels to Bluefield State on Saturday.
GOLF
places fifth at event
MYRTLE BEACH – Orangeburg golfer Ford Blanchard finished fifth at the 38th annual George Holliday Memorial Junior Golf Tournament held November 23-25, 2006 at the SouthCreek,
West Course and King#,s North courses at Myrtle Beach National.
Blanchard shot a three-day total of 237 in the Boys 12-13 Year Old Division of the three-day junior tournament, sanctioned by the South Carolina Junior Golf Association.
The annual junior championship is held in memory of George Judson Holliday III of Galivants Ferry who won many junior level tournaments while attending Mullins High School and later at the Asheville School for Boys in North Carolina.
